Structural features and working principle of elliptical heads

Elliptical heads are a common type of pressure vessel head structure, possessing unique structural features and working principles.

 

An elliptical head consists of two parts: a rotating ellipsoidal surface and a cylindrical straight section. Its structural characteristics are mainly reflected in several aspects: First, the elliptical head has a simple and compact structure, and its manufacturing process is relatively mature, resulting in relatively low cost and suitability for mass production. Second, the elliptical head exhibits superior pressure-bearing performance. The elliptical surface geometry allows for uniform stress distribution under internal pressure, effectively reducing stress concentration and improving the pressure-bearing capacity and service life. Furthermore, elliptical heads have a wide range of applications, meeting various process conditions and usage requirements. Their size and shape can be customized according to actual needs, offering a degree of versatility and flexibility.

 

In terms of working principle, elliptical heads are primarily used as the end caps of pressure vessels or bearing end caps. When a pipeline reaches its end and does not extend further, the elliptical head is welded to the pipe, serving as a closed end. In a pressure vessel, there is one elliptical head at the top and one at the bottom, connected to a straight pipe section in the middle, collectively forming the tank of the pressure vessel. Elliptical heads, through their special geometry, distribute internal pressure evenly across the entire head, thereby ensuring the safety and stability of the pressure vessel.
